[Bay of Biscay and English Channel]
Single sheet. Col. ms. Medium: Vellum. Scale: [ca. 1:3 000 000 (lat)]. Cartographic Note: Latitude scale. Soundings out to 100 fathoms (the edge of the continental shelf). Scale in leagues. Contents Note: Tidal information is provided for the Channel and continental ports. Decorative compass roses.
This chart is one of the earliest extant to show soundings as far out as 100 fathoms. It was drawn by Thomas Hood, a lecturer in mathematics and navigation, who apparently never went to sea. It is indicative of a growing interest in navigation in the Elizabethan period. Hood was the author of several important works on navigation, including 'The Mariners Guide' (1592).
