Alonso de Ovalle was a Jesuit priest born in Chile in 1601. This map was included in his book, Historica relacion del Reyno de Chile y de las missiones y ministerios que exercita en él la Compañía de Jesus, which described the Spanish conquest of Chile and the Arauco War (fought between the Spanish colonisers and the Mapuche people).
