The South Isles of Orkney, to show the situation and extent of Scapa Flow, as a proposed roadsted for line-of-battle-ships, most humbly presented to the Rt. Honble. the Lords Comissioners of the Admiralty: by Graeme Spence, late maritime surveyor to their Lordships. 1812
Single sheet, hand coloured engraving, pasted onto a card mount. Scale [circa 1:63,360 (bar)]. The chart contains compass variation and tidal information and marks eddies and whirlpools. Bearings for passages between the islands are given. There are two insets: A Mercator chart of the west of Europe by G Spence 1812 [circa 1:7,000,000], and: A general chart of the Orkney Isles with the adjacent coast of Scotland [circa 1:500,000].
The chart shows three divisions of 10 ships each at anchor and contains in a text panel: A proposal for establishing a temporary rendezvous for line-of-battle-ships, in a natural roadsted called Scapa Flow, formed by the South Isles of Orkney. Spence warns that if the French could take possession of Orkney they could carry on hostilities from there.
