Contents Note: Street plan with key to public buildings and fortifications. During the War of the Knives, 1799-1800, Jacmel was laid seige to by Toussaint Louverture. Toussaint's victory meant he assumed control over all of Saint Domigue, a prelude to Haitian independence in 1804, when Haiti became the first state permanently to ban slavery. Antoine-François Sorrel des Revières, who made this map, formerly held sugar plantation estates on Saint Domingue, and moved to Louisiana as a result of the Haitian Revolution.
