This chart was engraved and published in Venice by Veronese cartographer Paulo Forlani, using information supplied by hte Portuguses cartographer Diego Homem. Forlani made much of it as innovative in being a printed navigational chart, writing in the dedication of the map "...as its [the Earth's] description according to the use of mariners has not yet been published, nor the sailing chart, a thing necessary to every sort of person, I being desirous of serving the world, am doing so, and have requested and obtained from S Giacomo Homem, Portuguese, a man excelling in this, a description of Europe and part of Africa and Asia, according to the use of mariners...and other things needed for good navigation..."

The chart is specifically mentioned by Ortelius in his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, and was reissued several times. This copy has at some point been hand coloured, with stylised views of cities in the portolan tradition added in.
