West Indische paskaert Waer in de graden der breede over weder zyden vande middellyn wassende soo vergroten dat die geproportioneert syn tegen hunne nevenstaende graden der lengde

Single sheet. Engraving, printed on vellum, hand-coloured in outline. The latitude scales have degrees marked on one side and distances from the equator, in leagues, on the other. South America and part of north-west Europe are shown in insets. This is one of the very earliest Mercator charts which would have been a useful tool for navigating at sea. It is a copper-plate engraving printed onto vellum, preferred by many seafarers at this time for its resistance to damp.

This state of the chart records the discovery of the South Atlantic island of Saxonburgo by Willem Schellinger in 1669.
