This album relates to the career of Senior Commissioned Gunner Archibald John Callcott Farlow between 1941 and 1943 when he was serving on HMS Nigeria (1939). Photographs include ship portraits, groups and deck scenes, collision and torpedo damage to the ship and Arctic and Malta convoys. HMS Nigeria (1939) was involved in ‘Operation Gauntlet’ the Allied raid on Spitsbergen in August and September 1941 to destroy the coal mines there. She was the flagship Force K commanded by Rear Admiral Vian. In 1942 she took part in Operation Pedestal.
The son of a tailor, Farlow was born 28 November 1899 at Gravesend in Kent. He joined TS Exmouth in 1912 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy Seaman in 1915. He was drafted to the Gunnery School at Chatham in 1918 and was appointed Acting Gunner in 1932. He joined HMS Nigeria (1939) in 1939 until 1943.
