Plate

A white soup plate printed and hand-coloured with over-glaze enamels. It has red and yellow lines around the rim. On the edge is the house flag of Devitt & Moore (quarterly red and blue with a white square in the centre), on a ribbon above 'DEVITT & MOORE'S' and below 'AUSTRALIAN LINE OF STEAM AND CLIPPER SHIPS.' The retailer's mark 'ALFRED FAIRBAIRNS LONDON' is printed on the base with an impressed date code and painted pattern number '7310'. Devitt & Moore carried passenger and cargo between Great Britain and Australia from 1863 until the end of the First World War, mainly in sailing vessels.
