Dish
Earthenware meat dish, printed in green in the centre with a port broadside view of a sail-assisted steam vessel, inscribed above 'DUNDEE, PERTH, & LONDON SHIPPING COMPANY'. Below the steamer are the arms of Perth (a paschal lamb supported by a double headed eagle). The arms are flanked by standards entwined with the city motto 'PRO REGE, LEGE ET GREGE' (for the King, law and people). The edge of the plate is printed with a green lace pattern. It is fitted with a hanging wire and a newspaper cutting is attached to the reverse giving the history of the company. The Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Co. was founded in 1826, and was a direct descendent of the Dundee Shipping Co. started in 1798. The company conveyed goods and passengers between Dundee, Perth and other ports on the Tay and London, Glasgow and Liverpool. The vessel is probably 'Perth', built in 1834 by John Wood of Glasgow. The maker's mark is impressed on the base of the dish.
