This is a black card covered album containing 69 photographs glued in on 24 leaves, with most photographs having good captions.

This album relates to the early career of Engineer Rear-Admiral Rene Charles Hugill and contains photographs of the Royal Naval College, Manadon, 1901-1905 showing engineer cadets under training. Ships include HMS Grafton (1892), HMS Swiftsure (1903), HMS Ocean (1898), HMY Victoria and Albert (1899) with interiors, and U155 (1916). There are also images of royalty including King Edward VII, Queen Alexandra, Empress Marie of Russia and Prince Olaf of Norway. Other people include Admiral Beatty on 21/11/1918.

Rene Charles Hugill was born in 1883 and entered the Royal Naval Engineering College in 1901 as a cadet rising to Engineer Rear-Admiral Hugill in 1936. He was ADC to the King in 1936. He was created MVO in 1916, OBE in 1919 and CB in 1944. He died in Lewisham 11 February 1962. His father-in-law was naval chaplain Reverend H Blackwell (see Album 856).

It is recorded in this album that photos marked with a tick were copied by the NMM in 1955. This would have been acq. no. PR1955/100 [XBA1449]. The 1955 neg. register has been checked together with the subjects of these photographs (HMS Aboukir, Corfu etc) and no sign of this work having been carried out has been found.
