Woolwork picture
Framed woolwork picture by G.W. Smith of a warship under sail. Inscription on reverse: ‘Designed and worked by G.W. Smith of Shore House, Pinmill Suffolk during his life on sailing ships including the pleasure yachts of the late Queen Victoria and King Edward VII (the Victoria and Albert and Britannia).’ The picture is worked in satin stitch in knitting wool on canvas, the rigging in silk sewing thread. The ship is flanked by drapes, and in an oval frame, the design decorated with red, white and blue twist and tassels. There are two flags on either side - the Merchant Jack, the French ensign and on the other side the Red Ensign and the flag of the Netherlands. There is a checked pattern at the base of the picture worked in green, white, red and blue wool. The ship is flanked by two storey building which may be fishermen's huts. The embroidery is in its original maple frame.
