Full hull model; Plank-on-frame; Display stand
Scale: not calculated. Stand for a model of the clinker-built boat 'Alert' which appears to be designed for river work, with a centreboard, which would have helped to give the vessel stability and control in a tidal stream. The model is equipped with a large rudder, a pair of oars, thwarts, a small store locker at the after end, and even a set of four gold velvet cushions, padded and decoratively stitched in yellow thread. The vessel – if it ever existed – was called ‘Alert’ as we can see from the bows and stern, though its date is very uncertain. It might have been a working boat used for plying passengers up and down rivers, or the model may have been made purely for pleasure.
It has been well put together, especially the hull, made up of wafer-thin planks of mahogany. Thus for its size the model is as light as a feather. It might be a toy, a pond model, as the drop keel is made of brass and actually works. There is a provision for a mast right at the fore but, if one was ever fitted, it is no longer with the model.
