Warship; 12 guns
Full hull model of a 12 gun sixth rate sloop. Model is decked. The bag with two bits of wood is marked SLR2701.1
Scale: Unknown. Unidentified part from a contemporary full hull model of a proposed 12-gun warship, carved from a solid piece of wood. The upper works are rounded in a ‘whaleback’ fashion together with the cupola gun emplacement along the broadside. This shape is presumably designed to deflect incoming shot as well providing a watertight hull. There is a single screw at the stern, of the pattern that dates the model from 1860-70, while the rudder is outboard on a frame but now missing. The fact the hull is of shallow draught, and is fitted with bilge keels would suggest that the area of operation for this vessel would be in sheltered waters.
