Three children in the "Apple Eating" contest, possibly in the ballroom of the 'Chusan' (1950)
Three children, two with their hands behind their backs, trying to catch apples in their mouths. The apples are suspended from string above their heads between pillars in the ballroom in 'Chusan' (1950). In the background, out of focus, are parents and children watching the competition.
Cruising was not originally a child-friendly activity, and children were banned from certain areas of the ship. This changed in the 1950s, when holiday-makers started to demand more family facilities. Many shipping lines began to employ hostesses who devised amusements tailor-made for young passengers, like the contest here (a variation on apple-bobbing).
