Contents: This album relates to the career of Paymaster Captain William Guy Ward-Smith. Images of ships include HMS Marlborough (1912), HMS Iroquois (1918), IJNS Mutsu (1920), HMS Galatea (1934), HMS Hunter (1936) mined, HMS Despatch (1919), HMS Glowworm (1916), AFD9 (1927), Manuta (1909), HMS Triad (1909), Rawalpindi (1925), HMS Shoreham (1930). Places include the Persian Gulf, RN Barracks Devonport, Devonport Dockyard 1921, Paracel Islands, Hong Kong, Sandakan, British North Borneo, Singapore, RN Barracks Portsmouth 1931, Persian Gulf, Muscat, Kuwait, Basrah, Henjam, Malta. There are also many photographs of naval officers, various sports and ships’ pets. People include King Ghazi of Iraq (1912 – 1939).

Paymaster Captain Ward-Smith was born 4/12/1895 in Muttra, India. He entered the Royal Navy and was Assistant Clerk 15/7/1913, Clerk 15/7/1914, Assistant Paymaster 15/10/1916, Paymaster Lieutenant 15/10/1918 and Paymaster Commander 30/6/1934. In 1928 he was serving on the survey ship HMS Iroquois (1918) on the China Station employed charting the Straits of Malacca. In 1932 he was serving as Paymaster Lt Cdr on HMS Triad (1909) in the Persian Gulf and in 1934 on HMS Shoreham (1930) also in the Gulf. He later served in HMS Despatch (1919) and was engaged in rescuing Spanish refugees during the Spanish civil war.
