Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding Corporation, Portland, Maine, USA, 1st January 1941-November 1942

This is an album with a black wraparound cover of 'top grain cowhide' on the front of which, in gold, are the words 'TODD-BATH IRON SHIPBUILDING CORP. 1941-1942' and, at the bottom right, 'H. REGINALD GIBBS'. The 28 photographs are in plastic packets, 2 to a pocket, fastened with aluminium screws (with the exception of 1 packet, which is loose). The original captions (on the faces of the photographs) have been supplemented by notes (on the plastic covers) made by Steven Gibbs, son of H. R. Gibbs.

The album depicts the site of the shipbuilding yard, its construction and the building of many of the 30 "Ocean" type merchant ships built there for Britain between 24th May 1941 and 10th November 1942.
The album includes the following vessels: Ocean Liberty (1942), Ocean Freedom (1942), Ocean Honour (1942), Ocean Faith, Ocean Strength, Ocean Angel, Ocean Trader, Ocean Wanderer, Ocean Merchant, Ocean Pilgrim (1942), Ocean Glory (1942), Tug Cumberland (1910).
These vessels are also inlcuded in the album, and were launched on the same day, 16/8/42: Ocean Seaman (1942), Ocean Gallant (1942), Ocean Wayfarer (1942), Ocean Stranger (1942), Ocean Traveller (1942).
Also inlcuded in the album is Henry Reginald Gibbs (1904-77), Lloyd's Register of Shipping Surveyor at the yard and original owner of the album.

In 1943 the Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding Corporation merged with the South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation to become the New England Shipbuilding Corporation.
