First practice plate engraved by R.J. Cooney, commenced Oct. 1951, completed Dec. 1952.
Pull from a practice plate by an apprentice engraver, Roy Cooney, at the Hydrographic Dept, Taunton. Main blocks dated, first week's work delineated. Demonstrates the painstaking repetition involved in acquiring the skills of an engraver, and the progress from simple lines to complex characters. Culminates in a chartlet which brings all the skills shown on the plate together. It was only after completion of a practice plate that an apprentice would be allowed to make small corrections to the plates in the navigational series.
