'Village & Head House of the Segu Tribe / on the Manuk or Segur River / Borneo'
This lithograph is one of eight loose items in Fanshawe's West Indies, North American and Borneo scrapbook (ZBA4855). The original drawing for it is also present (ZBA4904). It is printed on two joined sheets of india paper, laid down on a thicker sheet. The paper or thin card backing bears the title given, lower centre, inscribed in pencil by Fanshawe flanked on the left by 'E. G. Fanshwe delt' and (right ) 'M. F. lith.' Who 'M. F.' was is unknown: probably another of the family but not one of his children, none of whom had that initial. Fanshawe's 1904 memoir spells the tribal name as Sigu rather than Segu, possibly taking its lead from the published journal of Rajah Brooke, which it quotes quite extensively. [PvdM 2/11]
