The mouth of the Tyne, with North and South Shields, by moonlight

A view looking into the Tyne at North Shields by moonlight: one of eight loose items in Fanshawe's West Indies, North American and Borneo scrapbook (ZBA4855). Identified locations are inscribed in pencil by the artist on the reverse of the card, north to south (i.e. right to left on the image): 'Dockwray Square', with 'Clifford's Fort' below on the waterfront in 'North Shields'; 'Tyne River'; and 'South Shields', of which little is shown. In the centre foreground what is probably a Tyne keel (barge) is in bow view coming out of the river but invisible behind its loosely hanging square sail. The date of this drawing is unknown but probably from the mid-1840s or later. [PvdM 2/11]
