In the tidal basin of Portsmouth Dockyard

A close-up view of the starboard bow of the hired trawler Exmouth (1912) berthed in the Tidal Basin of Portsmouth Dockyard in August or September 1914. She is wearing pendant 146 and has been fitted with an experimental form of mine clearing gear attached to her bow. This gear proved to by ineffective as well as cumbersome to operate and was soon removed. Ahead of the Exmouth (1912) is the ‘C’ class torpedo boat destroyer Greyhound (1900) with the ‘B’ class torpedo boat destroyer Kangaroo (1900) outboard of her. Beyond the bow of the Exmouth (1912) is a Thornycroft built destroyer of the ‘K’ class, Paragon (1913), Porpoise (1913), Unity (1913) or Victor (1913). An interesting signboard on the quayside beyond this destroyer reads “Stand for bullock carts”. In the right background fitting out in No. 3 Basin is the battleship Queen Elizabeth (1913).
