The forward superstructure of HMS Sheffield (1936) in Arctic waters.
A view of the forward superstructure of the light cruiser HMS Sheffield (1936) in Arctic waters. The photograph has been taken on the portside looking forward from near the tripod mast strut and the 'pom-pom' gunners shelter [bottom left of the picture]. The crewman to the left is manning a 20-inch searchlight on the lower bridge for daylight visual signalling. To the right of him another crewman is clearing ice from the top of the boiler room vent. Above them both on the air defence platform is a third figure scanning the horizon with binoculars. The 6-inch director mounted on the bridge is just visible at the top of the picture, while part of the portside High Angle Control Station (HACS) with Type 285 can be seen on the left. The photograph is credited to RN official photographer Lieutenant R G G Coote.
