Europae
Atlas sheet from an edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum with Latin text, published in 1573. Hand coloured copperplate engraving. This map of Europe extends from Greenland to North Africa and has borders graduated for latitude and longitude. There is a compass, which is not aligned with the projection) at top right and a distance scale (of little utility, as the scaleof the map varies from north to south) at bottom left. The title is on a plinth which is surmounted by Europa and the bull (of classical mythology). The land in Tartary is decorated with tents and the Atlantic is decorated with a ship.
