Compass and Binnacle
A Russian standard dry card compass as used in the mid-19th century. This compass is dated 1871. The card and bowl conform to the Admiralty standard compass of 1840. The bowl proper is mounted inside another very heavy bowl carried in massive gimbals of an unusual type. A hood revolves on rollers and is maintained in position by three keep screws. An oil lamp is fitted in the top of the hood. The compass has been mounted, for exhibition purposes, on a stand adapted from an old Admiralty standard binnacle (as no binnacle accompanied the compass when it was originally acquired by the Admiralty Compass Observatory).
