Richard Green (1803-63)
Parian-ware bust of the shipowner, Richard Green (1803-63). The bust is unglazed and shown classically draped on a circular socle separately attached with a metal nut. On the back, an inscription reads 'RICHARD GREEN ESQ', 'EDWD W. WYON SCULPTOR LONDON 1863'. The death of Richard Green, a notable charitable benefactor in East London and to shipping causes, was regarded as a public tragedy. It is therefore likely that a considerable number of these busts were made. The sculptor is one of a large and well-known family of seal engravers and medallists.
