'Informal pose in the wheelhouse'

This is one of 262 drawings and 2 paintings presented to the Museum by the artist's family in 2012, and related to John Kingsley Cook's wartime service in the merchant navy between December 1940 and August 1945. It is drawn on the back of a fragments of a navigational chart showing soundings, letters indicating the quality of the bottom, and graticule. The chart's engraving style is consistent with publications from the US Coast and Geodetic Survey. The verso bears the censorship stamp, signed and dated: 'passed for publication, 15 August 1941', and the inscription, in the hand of the artist: 'Informal pose in the Wheelhouse. For Vera'.
