'On the shelter deck looking forward'
This is one of 262 drawings and 2 paintings presented to the Museum by the artist's family in 2012, and related to John Kingsley Cook's wartime service in the merchant navy between December 1940 and August 1945. It is Inscribed at the verso, in the hand of the artist: 'On the shelter deck looking forward. April 3rd 1941'. It s drawn on the back of a fragement of a navigational chart showing soundings (deep), lines indicating magnetic variation, graticule, and the bottom of a compass rose. The fragment is part of the right hand edge of the chart.
