'View across the desert from Méchéria' [Mecheria]
This is one of 262 drawings and 2 paintings presented to the Museum by the artist's family in 2012, and related to John Kingsley Cook's wartime service in the merchant navy between December 1940 and August 1945. This was drawn while Cook was in captivity in Algeria, between October 1941 and November 1942. Him and his fellow survivors spent their first weeks of captivity in Bône [Bone], before being transferred to the camp of Méchéria [Mecheria], in the Atlas moutains, in January 1942.
