Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1846-56

Epaulettes worn by Vice-Admiral Charles Napier. The epaulettes are of wide gold lace over sheet metal with a padded crescent. The strap is edged iwth twisted gold purl, alternatling birhg and dull and borderd on either side with narrow twisted gold wire. The crescent is edged with twisted gold purl and file wound around a wooden core. On the strap is a crown of red velvet embroidered with purl and file above a metal crossed sabre and baton above two stars of purl and sequins. There are twenty large outer gold bullions and eighteen small inner gold bullions (one is missing).

Underside: The underside of the epualette strap is covered in leather with the following stamp in gold: "Galt & Son/Naval &/Regimental/Tailors/Portsmouth" The crescent is padded and covered in blue velvet. There are three brass eyes at the top of the strap and two at the base. The bottom tow retain their blue tying tapes the ends of which are bound in copper aiguillettes. A copper wire has been passed through the three brass eyes.
