Two handled cup with cover

A two handled cup and cover, engraved round the lid: 'This Vase is respectfully presented to Mr Chas. Jordan in testimony of his gallant conduct on the 14th of Octr. 1777 by the inhabitants of Montego Bay, Jamaica'. During the War of American Independence on 15 October 1777, Continental Privateer sloop 'Guest', Commander Edward McKaller, was captured by HM Sloop 'Racehorse', Acting Lieutenant Charles Jordan (d. 1779), forty-five miles north of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Charles Jordan was promoted to Lieutenant on the 26 October 1777 and was lost at sea two years later. The cup and cover are embossed with flowers and foliage. The Jordan crest and coat of arms are engraved in reserves on either side of the body of the cup.
