The 'concert party' in fancy dress posing on the quarterdeck of HMS 'Aurora' (1913).
The 'concert party' in fancy dress on the quarterdeck of the light cruiser HMS 'Aurora' (1913). The group are standing and kneeling on the starboard side with the barrel of the 6 inch gun just in the picture. The dog, previously on the lap of one of the mandolin players can be seen (blurred) at the bottom of the photograph [see N22681]. Two of the crew (dressed as women) are holding up a notice board. Written above and below an outline of an Iron Cross with 'W II" [possibly referring to Wilhelm II of Germany] are the words 'HMS AURORA. CONCERT PARTY [Iron Cross] FOR VALOUR 1916". The occasion is described as Sports Day, although N22681 describes the event as Regatta Day.
