Siapo
Bark cloth hand painted (siapo mananu) in brown with a geometric pattern of triangles and dots. The edge is cut into a zigzag pattern. The design is likely either Samoan or Niuean. Strings are attached to the top two corners, and a label sewn onto the edge, inscribed with 'Samoan Native Dress made of tree fibre'.
The zigzag tabs created on the edge of this cloth is unusual and suggests it may be cut from a much bigger piece, most likely a skirt or dress. This is an early pattern design, but a later execution of it in the late 19th century. The cloth was formerly in the collections of the London Missionary Society, and is accompanied by a postcard stating that it was brought in 1896 by Miss E. Moore.
