Canoe prow figure
A Solomon Islands canoe prow figure (nguzu nguzu). The carved wooden head of a figure which holds a smaller head. The details are formed of inlaid shell. They are currently made for souvenir sale. The carving is closely based on a traditional design of which the British Museum holds a number of examples. These figureheads were tied to canoe prows on trading and raiding voyages from the Western Solomon Islands during the late 19th and early 20th century. Their purpose was to watch out for danger. Formerly in the collections of the London Missionary Society later the Council for World Mission.
