Looking aft from the foremast of HMS 'Aurora' (1913) during speed trials.
Looking aft from the control top on the foremast at the wake of the light cruiser HMS 'Aurora' (1913) during speed trials in Black Deep in the North Sea. Black smoke is belching from the fore funnel partially obscuring the view. The 34ft cutter can be seen on the starboard side swung inboard. The two 4 inch guns are trained forwards.
HMS Aurora left Sheerness having been refitted at Chatham on 17 May and proceeded at high speed to Portsmouth. The next day was spent conducting mine laying trials off Spithead. [Ship's log, TNA, ADM 53/34496].
