Lieutenant Geoffrey D'O. Earwaker fishing with Staff Surgeon Maurice R. Male (standing) and an unidentified officer on the port quarter of the light cruiser HMS Aurora (1913). Lt. Earwaker is sitting on one of the supports for the mine laying fittings to be added to the ship. In the foreground are the filled ready-use ammunition racks for the after six-inch gun. While at Chatham Dockyard between 27 April and 16 May 1917 Aurora was refitted, which included mine laying gear. Mines were embarked on 13 May and the gear tested. At Portsmouth Aurora conducted mine laying trials on 18 May and then unshipped the mining gear on 21 May before shipping the mine rails the following day. [Ship's log, TNA, ADM 53/34496]
