Bow view of the light cruiser HMS 'Penelope' (1914) in rough seas
A view from the starboard side of the light cruiser HMS 'Aurora' (1913) near the after six inch gun looking over the stern towards HMS Penelope (1914). Penelope's bow is obscured by large wave and spray from the rough seas. Her sounding booms can be seen rigged out each side of the superstructure. In the foreground on the quarterdeck of 'Aurora' are the six inch ready use ammunition racks with the Carley Float lashed down behind.
Assuming the original identified date is correct: The ship's log for Aurora (1913) records the 30 November as being force 5-6 with a period of 6-7 and she was at sea from the morning of 29 November and returned to Harwich in the afternoon of 1 December 1915. It may be that Penelope was in company. The rest of the month was relatively calm at light airs to force 3.
There are a few blemishes on the negative, and the foreground detail is dark.
