Port broadside view of the light cruiser HMS 'Penelope' (1914) underway at speed.
A port broadside view of the light cruiser HMS 'Penelope' (1914) underway at speed abreast HMS 'Aurora' (1913). Smoke is pouring from her three funnels. The glare of sunlight on the water has over-exposed the negative slightly.
This negative has been dated to the seaplane raid off Horns Reef aimed at airship sheds at Hoyer. The fleet left in early morning of 24 March for the raid on 25 March. HMS Aurora was part of this force providing patrolling and screening.
The top centre of the negative has no emulsion, leaving a black curved area on the print above the mast of the Penelope.
