Portrait medallion

An oval blue jasper portrait medallion depicting Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The portrait was modelled by John de Vaere in 1798 and shows Nelson after the loss of his arm in 1797 wearing the star and sash of the Order of the Bath. The blue background has a moulded rim and the medallion is mounted in an ebonized oval wooden frame. The maker's name is impressed on the reverse with the incised inscription 'Nelson'.
