Buckley, HMS Shropshire (1928), April 1932 - July 1933

A brown cloth and card album containing black and white photographs.

This album covers Rear Admiral Buckley’s command of the cruiser HMS Shropshire (1928) from 1932-33 as a captain. In 1929 Shropshire was assigned to the 1st Cruiser Squadron of the British Mediterranean Fleet and remained there until the outbreak of war in 1939. The photographs in this album show officers visiting various Mediterranean ports including Gibraltar, Corfu, Athens and Malta. There are many photographs of social events, sun bathing with scantily clad ladies and picnics which illustrate the relaxed time officers were enjoying in the Royal Navy in the early 1930’s. There are also photographs of children including two named Bruce and Yvonne who are possibly Buckley’s children although he doesn’t say so.

Later on in 1935-6 HMS Shropshire was involved in the Abyssinian Crisis and was present for the Spanish Civil War.
