Journal kept on HMS ANTRIM, 1914 - 1915.

The journal includes sighting submarines, and his joining the Grand Fleet on active service. HMS ANTRIM captured a German merchantman on 6 August 1914, and on 9 October is unsuccessfully attacked by a German submarine U-16. Refers to ‘Kent’s action with light cruisers’ in December 1914 and U boats being sunk. He comments on 11 December 1914 that ‘lack of confidence in our Hari Kari leader is not only felt in the Antrim’.
In January 1915 Bald transfers to HMS RESOLUTION and gives a detailed account of attacking the German ship SMS BLUCHER at the Battle of Dogger Bank. British destroyers attempted to rescue German sailors but were driven off by German Zeppelins who assumed SMS BLUCHER was British as British ships were attempting to assist. It also contains a synopsis of submarine attacks on the 3rd cruiser squadron on HMS BIRMINGHAN and HMS NOTTINGHAM between 19 June and 20 June 1915 with plan of damage.
