On board the Indian kotia type dhow Karimi (fl.1938) anchored at Colombo, Ceylon. The photographer is standing just to starboard of the centreline in the waist looking forward and to port showing the cargo hatches and the base of the foremast. An awning is rigged over the waist abaft the foremast. A crew member is on the left preparing a meal and other crew are apparently working cargo over the port waist bulwark. The photographer was taking passage in the heavy cruiser Cumberland (1926) from Singapore to the U.K. at the time.
