Two sampans standing by for service near the Royal Navy aircraft carrier Eagle (1918) at Tsingtao. The nearest boat is seen from the starboard beam and has a crew of two. The other sampan is seen from off the port quarter and also has a crew of two. Both sampans have the number 1 in a circle painted on the quarter. The photographer is looking down from on board the Eagle (1918) which was at Tsingtao in the periods 22 July to 13 August 1937 and 17 August to 5 September 1937.
