A port side view of the three masted Tsungming cotton trader junk 4287 under sail at Shanghai
A port side view, taken from ahead of the beam, of the three masted Tsungming cotton trader junk 4287 under sail at Shanghai. She has lug sails set on each mast and a leeboard is deployed amidships. The material of her mainsail is in two parts with a vertical gap between the two pieces, presumably to allow a certain amount of wind spill. The junk's port number is painted twice on the hull. The photographer's ship was in Northern Chinese waters in the periods 3 June to 10 October 1937 and 8 June to 4 September 1938. A vertical format negative and the horizon is not level.
