An head and shoulders portrait of a sampan man hanging on to the sail halyard on board his sampan at Weihaiwei. he is wearing a floppy hat and is known to the photographer as 'Smiler's mate'. The photographer's ship was at Weihaiwei in the periods 3 June to 21 July 1937, 14 to 17 August 1937, 6 September to 7 October 1937, 8 June to 12 August 1938 and 20 August to 4 September 1938.
