A group of six sampans moored close to the shore at Weihaiwei. Two are moored bow-on and the other four are stern-on. Other sampans and some single masted dinghies further offshore. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary oiler Francol (1917) is at anchor in the distance. The photographer's ship was at Weihaiwei in the periods 3 June to 21 July 1937, 14 to 17 August 1937, 6 September to 7 October 1937, 8 June to 12 August 1938 and 20 August to 4 September 1938.
