A port side view of a rigged and fully equipped model of a sampan on a wooden stand at the Roman Catholic church at Liu Kung Tao near Weihaiwei
A slightly distant port side view, taken from ahead of the beam, of a fully rigged and equipped model of a sampan on a wooden stand at the Roman Catholic church at Liu Kung Tao near Weihaiwei. Compared to the model depicted in negatives numbers P34493 to P34495 inclusive, her sail has eight battens, her bow is a slightly different design and she does not have an oculus on the bow. The model was commissioned by Lieutenant David Waters and was made by Tung Ya and his assistants. The photographer's ship was at Weihaiwei in the periods 3 June to 21 July 1937, 14 to 17 August 1937, 6 September to 7 October 1937, 8 June to 12 August 1938 and 20 August to 4 September 1938. A photographic print from this negative is in Waters' album Volume I and it is described as a 'chicken' sampan although it has no oculus.
