Plate

A white soup plate with a red and yellow edge to the rim. The company house flag is shown in the middle (quarterly red and blue with a white square in the centre) with a ribbon inscribed: 'DEVITT & MOORE'S' above and 'AUSTRALIAN LINE OF STEAM AND CLIPPER SHIPS' below. The plate is painted over the glaze with the names of company ships '1836 GATESIDE RODNEY IRVINE TAMAR DERWENT OUTALPA HESPERUS HAWKESBURY ISLES OF THE SOUTH ILLAWARRA VIMIERA CHAA-SZE LA HOGUE SIMLA MEDWAY PEKINA GRASMERE SOBRAON CITY OF ADELAIDE DUKE OF ATHOL ST VINCENT COLLINGWOOD SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SS QUEEN OF THE THAMES SS GLENELG ST DUNSTAN PORT JACKSON HARBINGER PARRAMATTA DUNBAR CASTLE MACQUARIE JOHN RENNIE'. The date mark is impressed on the base. Devitt & Moore carried passenger and cargo between Great Britain and Australia from 1863 until the end of the First World War, mainly in sailing vessels.
