Hard bread
A piece of hard bread. The associated label written by the donor, the Reverend D. L. Graham reads: 'A slice of a Russian soldier's rations in the line - exactly as received by me in Murmansk 1942, except for a few nibbles by mice and by myself'. He served in HMS 'Trinidad' which delivered supplies to the port. 'H.M.S. Trinidad limped into Murmansk with much of the centre of the ship missing and with food stores flooded with either water or oil. The oil-fouled meat was declared unfit for human consumption and when placed on the dock-side to be carried away for destruction, was eagerly seized on by Russian workers who took it home - they were very short of food in March 1942. The Russians supplied us with some rations of which the piece of bread was part; it is exactly as when delivered to us.'
