Patch box
Oval patch box commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The surface is enamelled, the base and sides royal blue. The lid is white with a border of leaf sprigs. It is painted with a coloured design of two anchors and a cannon surrounded by the inscription: 'LIKE NELSON may each Briton be', 'A friend to King and country'. Inside the lid is painted 'Q. Mary 1937'. This inscription relates to the donor, Queen Mary (1867-1953), wife of George V, who made a collection of Nelsoniana and presented items from it to the Museum.
