Patch box
Oval patch box with a mirror inside the lid, commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The surface is enamelled, the base white, the sides royal blue, the lid with a blue and gilt border with white spots. Painted in colour on the lid is a portrait of Nelson within a laurel wreath and surmounted by a crown. The portrait is flanked by doves with branches in their beaks perched on foliage sprays and surrounding the whole, the inscription 'Brave NELSON'S Manly Fortitude', 'Is Crowned with Royal Gratitude'.
