Patch box

Oval patch box with a mirror inside the lid, commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) and the battle of the Nile. The surface is enamelled, base white, sides royal blue. The lid with a tinted transfer of a winged figure representing Victory holding a cross in one hand and a portrait medallion in the other. Behind her is a pyramid and to one side, a palm tree, lion and harp. The scene is inscribed: 'Nothing can oppose Virtue & Courage', 'Victory of the Nile Augt 1 1798'. The lid has a blue, gilt and white border.
